Insect Pests Affecting Trees in Southwestern Ontario

In southwestern Ontario, trees face threats from various insect pests categorized into five primary types:

Defoliators

Defoliators attack tree foliage, affecting deciduous trees and conifers. Healthy trees can often recover from their damage since it's not systemic. However, significant foliage loss can stress trees, deplete their energy reserves, and make them susceptible to other stressors.

Types of Defoliators:

  • Leaf Chewers: These pests consume large sections or entire leaves. Examples include the Fall Webworm and Gypsy Moth.
  • Leaf Skeletonizers: These insects eat the leaf's outer tissues, leaving behind a network of veins. The Oak leaf skeletonizer and Japanese beetle are common.
  • Leaf Miners: Small pests that tunnel within leaves, eating the interior tissues. The Birch leafminer and Cedar leafminer are notable examples.

Borers

Borers target the inner bark and wood, affecting all tree parts. They cause deformities, weaken tissues, and damage the cambium, leading to decline or death. The Emerald Ash Borer and Bronze Birch Borer are prevalent.

Sucking Insects

These insects extract sap from foliage or cambium, leading to vitality loss, wilting, or discoloration. Severe infestations can stress or kill trees. Aphids and Oystershell scale are widespread.

Gall Makers

Gall makers induce trees to produce abnormal growth, mainly affecting aesthetic value. Galls protect the insects, making treatment challenging. Standard gall makers include Ash flower gall and Oak & Hackberry gall.

Root Feeders

Root feeders consume the succulent parts of roots, typically posing little threat to established trees but endangering seedlings or newly transplanted trees. The Black Vine weevil and White Grubs are examples.
